Crowns have been known to break. The average dental crown in my Downtown Vancouver dental crown office are very durable. In fact, they could give you 15 years. They could last even longer, or they could weaken earlier.

Even the high-tech materials being used these days may have a shorter lifespan if you fail to care for them in the right way. Grinding your teeth together is not great for crowns. Some people do this at night though they have no knowledge that they do.

People with crown problems may also chew violently, or eat ice.

If you see a crack in your dental crown, it is almost always because of the porcelain. At the very least, it would be the porcelain part of the crown. Gold and other metal alloys will usually not fracture because they are very adaptable to the kind of pressures placed on them.

Because of this, metals like gold are great for underpinning dental crowns.

The problem with metals is that they don't look very nice. The answer is to fuse porcelain with the metal crown. Or, to look even better, use an all ceramic crown that has no metal at all. But you are sacrificing durability for looks.

The good thing about porcelain dental crowns is that they look like natural teeth. This is because it has that translucent look and feel that is characteristic of teeth. However, they are pretty soft. They can't adapt to the tremendous forces of your jaws from the vigorous act of chewing or grinding.

Also, porcelain's fragility makes it so that it takes only one crack for the damage to spread.

If your porcelain crown does break, you must get a new crown. If you leave it alone, you could suffer because it is medically not advisable. You are exposing yourself to infection. If you keep it as it is, the damage might be so bad that we will have to replace the entire tooth. And we may have to give you a dental implant.

My office can help you with any crown problems. If you are a Downtown Vancouver resident, and you have a fractured Downtown Vancouver dental crown, I really hope to come to my office and let my experienced team and I work on your teeth.
